Why Panic Symptoms Are Not Life Threatening
Gradually over the year Tom’s panic symptoms have worsened and is becoming a real problem. Being at work becomes more and more difficult to deal with. Feelings of apprehension and nervousness are always with him. Excessive thoughts of worry and dread plague him.
On the way home from work he goes grocery shopping. Even before he walks into the supermarket he feels his heart flutter. He fears of having another panic attack in public. He does his best to be calm and makes an attempt to avoid being noticed. When he gets to the checkout he realizes that it’s busy and people are queuing. He feels his chest tighten and his heart pound.
He recalls how the last panic attack felt and how uncontrollable the panic symptoms felt. Queuing at the checkout he imagines that everybody is watching him. He feels terrified and afraid of making an embarrassment of himself. Blood runs to his face and he starts to tremble. As his panic symptoms increase so do his anxiety and these seemingly unstoppable sensations become unbearable.
At this point all he wants to do is escape and get out of there. He feels like he’s going to lose his mind. As he leaves he feels like he’s about to explode. Emotionally and physically shaken he replays the horrible episode over again. The terrifying sensations are still with him as he rushes home.
If you suffer from an anxiety disorder this story might be familiar to you. Your panic attacks may be worse however. Panic symptoms are often terrifying and difficult to cope with. Also, panic attacks are more severe than anxiety attacks because of additional related symptoms. Two common ones include depersonalization and derealization.
Symptoms like these create disturbing and seemingly unreal experiences. A sufferer can experience very frightening and eerie sensations. What’s more is that these symptoms can trigger at any time, even when asleep. The unpredictability of panic attacks makes daily life hard to bear.
Sufferers are always worried about when the next attack will be. Usually a sufferer will avoid similar situations where they have previously had an attack. Most of the time a sufferer will go about his or her day experiencing anxiety and worry throughout.
They are likely to fear confrontational or social situations. Anxiety disorder sufferers normally have a lack of self-belief and assertiveness. This kind of behavior only reinforces their powerless control over panic symptoms. Fortunately, anxiety disorders can be cured.
