Living With Panic And Anxiety Attacks

What is the difference between a panic and anxiety attack? The main difference is that an anxiety attack is often provoked or triggered by a stressor. Even everyday situations can produce symptoms of anxiety. Practically anything from being late at a meeting, missing the bus or forgetting the laundry can create feelings of worry and fear.

You don’t need to suffer from an anxiety disorder to be suffering from an anxiety attack. This is because its normal for the body to react with the flight or flight response during a stressful situation. Some people hate rollercoaster’s while others love it. We each hold different beliefs and perceptions, on different experiences and situations.

A person suffering from an anxiety attack may feel apprehensive and nervous, and experience a racing heart. Often these minor symptoms subside after a few minutes. Panic attacks are different in that they are spontaneous. In fact, they can happen at any given time.

Suffering from a panic disorder can be a living nightmare. The thought of having a panic attack anytime makes life restrictive for the sufferer. Someone who suffers from an anxiety disorder may not necessarily experience anxiety attacks.

Common anxiety disorders such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) may produce symptoms of loss of energy and lethargy. GAD sufferers excessively worry about everyday things that need not worrying about. Their thoughts rarely switch off and they find it hard to relax even for one minute.

Panic and anxiety attacks can produce similar symptoms although in most cases, a panic attack is more severe. Symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness and a real sense of terror. What’s worse is that these attacks can go on for hours and symptoms can last for days, even weeks.

A sufferer may even avoid certain places because they’ve previously had a panic attack there. Trying to forget about having an attack is nigh on impossible, since sufferers know that an oncoming attack is inevitable.

Symptoms of panic and anxiety disorders may worsen without treatment. Causes of these disorders include environmental stressors and changes in the brain. Anxiety disorders may also run in families and can be passed on through generations.

Frequent panic attacks are highly debilitating for a sufferer. Fortunately panic and anxiety disorders can be treated. Apart from medication, behavioral therapy and alternative therapies are available. Such treatments can often reduce symptoms dramatically.
