First Aid For Anxiety Disorders

Is there anything that I should do if I only think that a person is having a panic attack?

If you believe that somebody is having symptoms are suggestive of a panic attack, and first try to work out whether they know what is happening or not. If this is a common occurence for them, try to calm them down and bring them into a more helpful state of mind.

Try to introduce yourself to them by telling them your name.

If you are not sure whether the person is having a panic attack or a heart attack - then what do you do?

It is sometimes difficult to distinguish a heart attack from a panic attack. Even doctors need to use diagnostic tests to help them make the distinction - so you will need to make a judgement.

Follow the basics and don’t worry if the diagnostics are too demanding. Look around for medicalert necklaces or bracelets. Follow any instructions given from the alert. Sometimes you need to call in the cavalry, just to stay safe.

OK - but if they are having a panic attack - then what do I do?

Clearly, one of you needs to be calm. Speak clearly and is slowly, using short and simple sentences. Tell them what is going on and keep letting them know that everything will be fine once the panic attack has ended. They may come up with some good ideas. Try to empower them and get them to feel strong and not small. Being frightened can be life saving.

Sadly, it is sometimes scary in inopportune times, which will lead to people feeling less resourceful and helped.
