Causes Of Depression Still Not Known

Let there be no doubt that depression is a serious mental illness that requires months and sometimes years of treatment on the path to a cure. Each year, millions of people come to the realization that they suffer from depression. The situation becomes worse because only one third of those who suffer depression ever get treated.

Depression has always been classified as a mental affliction. Therefore, many Americans choose not to be placed into that category. Instead of being considered mentally ill, people try to manage the problem themselves. Depression is more common- place than you might think and it will not go away on its own.

Causes of Depression
What are the causes for depression? The answer can get very complicated because you have to take many factors into consideration. Depression can be a long story because of many issues.

Here are a few of the parts of depression. Many medical professionals believe that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. But what causes the imbalance? Generally the causes are internal – biological issues, genetic disposition, mental problems – but there are external causes as well.

In many cases the underlying cause is never identified. Many become depressed when they are diagnosed with a very serious medical condition. This is especially the case if the diagnosis presents the possibility of death or impairment.

Depression can also stem from the emotional pain when a close person dies. Everyone knows such losses are serious. Depression often follows sexual or physical abuse, or emotional attacks. Substance abuse, either drug or alcohol, can also cause depression.

Even a perfectly healthy person, when exposed to the right combination of events and issues, can become afflicted with chronic depression. In many cases depression is passed on genetically. A strong correlation between family history of depression and current depression has been found . Oddly, many drugs including those that regulate depression or anxiety can cause depression. It has been clinically proven that some high blood pressure medication can cause depression.

Depression can result from stress. Stress can derive from many different areas in our life. Even positive events such as a marriage, a new baby or winning an award can cause stress.

In these cases it’s not the good event causing stress, but fear of the unknown and/or fear of ability to deserve or maintain the positive element. Arguments with family members, disputes with business clients can both cause stress. There are a great number of people who are stressed from simply trying to perform their jobs to satisfaction and trying to support their families from week to week. Knowing is half the battle. It’s important that those who suffer depression get medical help at once.
