An Exceptional Surgeon And An Admirable Mother

A woman who lived in the 1940s aspired to become a surgeon even when people strongly rejected that idea. Her dean at the medical school told her no one would train a woman surgeon, but agreed to write a recommendation for her. The daughter she adopted faced a critical situation.As the oldest, much of the burden of raising the younger children fell to her. She could rarely be seen at home and making her step into her motherly shoes is asking too much. Due to her dedication to her job, she barely spent any time with us. She recalls that the standing joke in their family was that when her mother couldn’t be found at home, they, the kids, would say that she was busy saving lives outside. But one of her daughters speak up of the sense of fun she had as their mother. Whenever her schedule would allow her, she’d be in soccer games with a megaphone of pompoms or even get out of her way by bringing in a fire truck during a local parade to surprise her kids.

Fanconi’s anemia, an inborn blood problem struck two of her sons and this required them to go on blood transfusion sessions as often as needed.These two kids got AIDS via blood transfusions even before the world knew what AIDS was all about.The two died just one year apart, one of them was 13 while the other one was 17.Her husband left her when their second son died around this time, her youngest female child also went away to study college. There was suddenly a vast emptiness despite the hustle and bustle of her career.

Things in her life fell apart. After seeing how her life shifted from full to empty made her move to Africa. This place mesmerized her as a child even when she has never set foot in this place before. Flying to Kenya, she aimed to understand animal problems further. Her next stop was the hospital with the highest cases of infant mortality and instances of AIDS in the world.

Upon her return she established a nonprofit group set up to help bring medical equipment, treatment and medical training to Eastern Kenya. She also takes young doctors there to study AIDS and the diseases it brings. Some robbers mercilessly beat her and her medical student companion up during their last visit to Kenya.
